Carly woke before Jane and took a few minutes to stare at her.

Her hair was dark and glossy, her eyebrows little darts of the same color. And those eyes. Behind the closed lids lay so much mystery and intelligence and integrity and… last night they’d held something else. Carly knew that look. It was desire.

And Carly had almost drowned in it. Thank goodness Jane had stopped them before they’d gone any further. She had protected Carly, despite her own desire.

Carly wanted to be with someone like that. Someone who put her companion’s wellbeing before her own desires. Liz wasn’t that person. Neither was Carly, for that matter. Jane was.

Carly hadn’t been bothered by the drinking the night before. She hadn’t been annoyed with caring for Jane. She’d wanted to, and part of her wouldn’t mind caring for her for a very long time.

Now that was a terrifying thought.

Almost as terrifying as admitting to her parents what she’d done. She had no idea why she’d told Jane about what she’d been doing, but having done so, she already felt better. Someone else finally shared in her secret.

You don’t have to commit to anything, she told herself. All she had to do now was finish the thing with Liz so she could figure out what this thing was with Jane. Maybe it was nothing, but even if it was nothing, she couldn’t keep leading Liz on. She’d been crazy agreeing to marry someone the weekend before she was committing herself to a lifetime of boredom in Nova Scotia. She knew herself. She should have known that would never work. And to someone like Liz?

She didn’t love her. She could admit it now. She never had. She had loved the love that Liz showered on her, but that was it.

And Liz, all she seemed to want was Carly’s money. It really hadn’t mattered before but now… it all seemed so shallow.

Her thoughts stopped in place as she heard a thump coming from the living room of the suite. She listened harder, and this time she definitely heard it. A knock.

Quiet as a light summer breeze, she slipped out from under the sheets and crawled out of bed. She tiptoed to the living room and opened the door to find Liz standing there, as if Carly had conjured her.

“I was an idiot,” Liz blurted. “I should have listened to you when you apologized. I was rushing you, and I’m sorry. I saw you with that woman at the panel, and I realized I should have listened to you.”

It was a perfect time to test her theory. To see if it was all about the money for Liz.

“I did leave you at the altar,” Carly said.

“It doesn’t matter. I don’t care.” Liz took a step forward. “I pressured you into marriage.”

“I went along with it, though.”

“I don’t care.”

“Weren’t you embarrassed?”

Liz tilted her head like an inquisitive parrot. Carly was having trouble seeing what it was that had attracted her to Liz. She was pretty, of course, but young.
